About us

Come on, we'll walk with you!
In the calm of the early morning, the canal looks so quiet from the heights of the town, and yet... The diversity of the landscape is one of the features that characterizes the Menez-Hom Atlantique destination, and the circuit from the station to the canal confirms this...

An ideal hike for families!
From the heights of Châteaulin to the banks of the Aulne, this hike is suitable for young and old alike! It's not just for good walkers. The circuits in the Menez-Hom Atlantique area are almost all hilly, but this route is the exception that proves the rule! What's more, the hike begins in a square where you'll have a privileged view of the Canal and the Châteaulin viaduct...

One hike, 2 atmospheres:
At the start of the hike, you admire the view of the canal over the heights of Châteaulin, in a wooded area where you'll be lulled by birdsong and flowering paths (bluebells, broom...). Then, at times, the wooded area breaks up to reveal a view of the Châteaulin countryside and its rapeseed fields... In this first part of the hike, tranquillity reigns, while at Port-Launay, the canal comes to life, ever so gently! Once you've reached Port-Launay, you'll follow the canal from Nantes to Brest, where the atmosphere is more maritime! Many pleasure boats are present.

A rich heritage
Along the way, you'll have the chance to appreciate a rich religious heritage (Saint-Idunet church, Saint-Nicolas church, both dating from the 19th century). We can't talk about heritage without mentioning the natural heritage offered by the Canal de Nantes à Brest. There's also a maritime heritage on offer, notably the lock and viaduct at the entrance to Châteaulin. Don't forget to stop off at the aquatic observatory at the Châteaulin lock!

Itinerary
Step 1/4:

The small station used to be the hub of the local "étoile de fer" rail network. This building is now the "maison du vélo", the headquarters of the town's associations celebrating cycling, culminating each year in the "Boucle de l'Aulne" event.

For the first few kilometers, you'll be walking through undergrowth. Here, the path overlooks the canal.

You arrive in the center of Port-Launay. A beautiful Napoleonic fountain stands in the square. Did you know that? In the 1880s, Port-Launay was the third-largest port in Finistère... after Brest and Morlaix!

You'll reach Châteaulin along the towpath of the Canal de Nantes à Brest. Don't hesitate to stop off at the aquatic observatory, and take a shopping or gourmet break in the town center!
