Saint-Nicaise Church
Why take advantage?
The slender steeple of the parish church of Saint-Nicaise (1576) stands proudly. At the entrance, there are a number of promising features inviting us to continue our discovery, such as an ossuary dating from the 17th century, a sundial dating from 1614, and twelve niches in the porch, each designed to house an apostle. The stained glass windows tell the story of Christ's Passion, and the sablières are richly decorated with grotesques and chimeras. Ancient statues and two reliquaries complete the interest of this monument.
The church is dedicated to Saint Nicaise, bishop of Reims in the 5th century, who was tragically murdered, along with his sister Saint Eutropie, by the Vandals or Huns. Legend has it that he carried his own severed head to his tomb.
The 17th-century calvary was partly created by the famous Roland Doré, whose enigmatic smile adorns the face of Saint John. A fountain from the same century, linked to the three Marys of the Bible, was reputed to protect sheep and prevent headaches. It is also believed to bring rain in times of need.
