Saint-Nicolas Church
Why take advantage?
The parish church of Saint-Nicolas (current building: 19th century) stands proudly in the central square and, together with the 1867 Italian-style fountain, contributes to the contemporary (by 1850) appearance of this seaport (mentioned in 1539). The urban space around the square included a wharf for wood and wine barrels, and a chapel, a two-storey building that was replaced by the current church in 1856.
Nicolas, in the 4th century, was the patron saint of many European regions and trades. He is one of the main saints of the Germanic and Orthodox Christian cult. The church's stained glass windows tell his story.
