Saint-Gildas chapel
Why take advantage?
At the edge of the Saint-Gildas woods, this long chapel, topped by a 1766 bell tower, is very sober. The interior features 1990 stained-glass windows by R. Budet on the life of Saint Gildas, a monk who founded the monastery in Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys. The transept crossing features a number of ancient statues, including one of Saint Tugen, invoked against rabies.
The fountain below is particularly large and unique, with two large basins and a three-lobed niche housing a statue of Saint Gildas as abbot. Its water is said to cure madness, rabies and fevers.
The calvary is complete, with the recognizable work of Roland Doré in 1660. A few metres away, the schist outcrops show the bedrock of the chapel and calvary. [ After Anne Dietrich ]
